Helen M. called us after her husband received forty-eight hours’ notice of recall. She knew the won reserves existed somewhere in the house. She did not know which envelope held the school deposit or whether the safe combination had been shared with anyone else.
Fortunately, her household had completed a playbook session six months earlier. She opened the bound document, turned to Section IV, and followed the relocation sequence. The school deposit was in Gold-2. The emergency fund was in Red-1. Her husband carried Blue-1 and Blue-2 for housing obligations that would continue during transit.
This article distils the relocation sequence structure we build into every playbook, adapted for households who have not yet completed a session.
Hour 0–4: Secure and Inventory
- Locate the primary custodian or their written records immediately.
- Open the safe and every envelope storage location. Do not move anything yet.
- Cross-check physical holdings against your most recent denomination log. Note discrepancies on paper.
- Identify which obligations have deadlines within the next thirty days (school fees, rent, remittance).
Hour 4–12: Assign and Pack
- Assign each travelling adult a specific set of envelopes by number and colour.
- Photograph every envelope label and the denomination log. Send images to both spouses’ phones and one trusted contact outside the household.
- Convert staging reserves (grey envelopes) only if the playbook or log specifies a conversion window that falls within your departure timeline.
- Pack envelopes in separate bags from documentation. Customs inspections happen; paperwork should be accessible without opening cash packaging.
Hour 12–24: Notify and Confirm
- Contact the school bursar, landlord, and any remittance recipient to confirm payment status and provide forwarding contact details.
- Notify your bank of travel and request temporary hold instructions on accounts that should not be accessed during transit.
- Confirm arrival banking arrangements at your destination — which accounts are active, which cards work, and what local cash you will need in the first seventy-two hours.
Hour 24–48: Depart and Hand Off
- The departing spouse carries emergency (red) and transit (grey) reserves.
- The remaining spouse retains local obligation envelopes (gold, blue) until their own departure date.
- Leave a copy of the denomination log and custodian map with one trusted local contact.
- Schedule a playbook review within two weeks of arrival at the new location.
If You Do Not Have a Playbook Yet
This checklist still helps, but every step becomes harder without a pre-built inventory. If your household faces a confirmed departure within two weeks, contact us immediately. We offer expedited playbook sessions when scheduling permits.
